Day Tripping to Fredericksburg, Texas

I feel really lucky that from San Antonio, Texas it's easy to be out in the Hill Country within an hour.  Sometimes it's really nice to get out of the city, and I love that Fredericksburg has become the Texas wine country.  Even if you are not a wine lover, the Fredericksburg area offers so much to see and do.  I typically spend the night, and highly recommend finding an Airbnb that you can keep visiting.  Many require two nights, but if you are local the owners will post when they have a one off night available.

This go around I left San Antonio a bit late and the kids were already hungry on the way.  If you like pizza, Promethius Pizza has some really wonderful options and they have a mean caesar salad.  Promethius is a food truck, but they now have a small patio area with picnic tables.  It is BYOB, so perfect to enjoy that local bottle of wine.  There are also some great places to have dinner along main street, but definitely make reservations because the restaurants often have two hour waits on busy weekends.  If looking for German food, Der Lindenbaum has authentic options.  If looking for an extensive beer selection with German mixed with new American then Altstadt Brewery  has you covered.

For dessert I usually let the kids have a free for all with their Christmas money at Big Pops Popcorn Company.  At Big Pops just grab a bag and fill up with all kinds of chocolates, candies, and jelly beans for $15/pound.  After a few bonfire failures in the past I decided to try City Bonfire, a concept I saw on Shark Tank.  If staying in an Airbnb I have to recommend the City Bonfire smores kit for dessert, which I have reviewed HERE.  I'm a huge fan!

Many people make the trek out to Fredericksburg for Enchanted Rock, but it books out way in advance.  Make sure you book a time well in advance to not be disappointed.  If you head out that way take snacks or a picnic because once out there it's pretty isolated.   Also, the rock can get very slippery in the morning with humidity so wear shoes accordingly.

If you are in the mood for a leisurely breakfast then head over to Emma and Ollie.  They have wonderful breakfast options including beignets.  My kids were a little antsy to start the day so we hit up Hill Country Donuts and Kolaches.  My favorite here is the egg and cheese on croissant.  It is heavenly.

A day in Fredericksburg is not complete without a visit to a winery.  There are the staples like Becker Vineyards and Grape Creek Vineyards, who have beautiful grounds and extensive tasting lists.  There are many new wineries opening, so this visit I decided to check out the Rhinory.  If you want to check out multiple wineries the Viator App has some really affordable shuttles that take you to the most popular ones.  They have a super cute air conditioned trolley that is good for groups.  To explore and book click HERE.

Just like you would expect from the name this winery offers an up close glimpse of a live rhinoceros.  I can't think of anything better to do on a beautiful day than sit out on a patio drinking wine watching the lovely rhino.  This Rhinory is super kid friendly and offers juice boxes, snacks and guided information about the rhinoceros.

If time allows, there are a few nice back country drives in between Fredericksburg and Stonewall that aren't too long.  Stonewall is also becoming a cool little town.  Orobianco creamery just opened with water buffalo milk gelato, paninis, and cheese.  Next door resides Hye Thai and Chocolates del rey.  Makes for a nice area to stop for lunch or a snack.

A trip out here is never complete without a bit of shopping. On Main Street in Fredericksburg there are so many cool shops it is hard to list them all, but the ones I find myself going back to are: Haberdashery Boutique , which has really nice handmade boots from places like Bosnia and Peru.  Venture 19, which is loaded with cool t-shirts, sweaters and hats.  Fritztown Mercantile that is part clothing, part toy store.  I'm not leaving town without the kids checking out that one.  Dogologie specializes in dog clothing, treats and gear.  If walking on Main street, wine and beer are legal to consume so it's fun to grab something from one of the tasting shops and walk around.

On the way out I always stop by Fredericksburg Pie company to pick up some slices for home.  They have so many traditional homemade flavors.  It's located in a super cute house behind the main street. They are closed right now for a break so check the website beforehand.  A few houses down don't miss the San Saba Soap Company stocked with unique oils and colognes.  It's a gem of a shop.

When it is time to leave I'm always a little sad to go back to the city, but glad to know this place is a short escape away.
