You had me at Sandwich
Sandwiches are one of those things that can be made at home, but there are some places in town that take sandwich making to the next level. When I'm too lazy to create at home these are my top spots in San Antonio to grab a sammy:
The Station Cafe
The Station is by far my favorite place in town to grab a sandwich. Located in King William, surrounded by beautiful historic homes The Station is churning out some delicious lunchtime eats. They have cold or hot sandwiches, vegetarian choices, and all sandwiches show a spice level next to them on the menu. If you like spicy they make a ghost pepper sandwich that will singe your taste buds. My favorite is the Station Muffaletta. It has an olive/pepper relish on a toasted bun. It hits the spot everytime. If you are there when they have the poblano soup add it on because it's delicious.
Bilia Eatery
Located in Castle Hills and fairly new to the sandwich scene, Bilia Eatery makes arepa style and traditional choices like a delectable turkey club. The arepa style is a dough stuffed with filling, and they make all different types of fillings. Bilia Eatery also has house made daily soups that hit the spot.
Zito's
Zito's is a New York sandwich deli type place with all of the classics like the Italian, Roast Beef, pastrami, and Reuben on choice of wheat or white roll. Served with chips, or they have macaroni and potato salad. Locations are in the Medical Center or close to the Airport.
Boss Bagel
If in the mood for something fast, but also fresh then head to Boss Bagel in Alamo Heights. Interesting flavors of cream cheese changing daily, and chef special sandwich changing weekly. These sandwiches are served on choice of soft chewy bagel, and have great breakfast options like smoked bacon and Mexican scramble.
Sandwiches de Paris
Located in the Medical Center, Sandwiches de Paris has classic sandwiches served on french bread. They have options like the Italiano with capicola, Herb Royale with basil pesto, or the popular Tsukemono with sirloin and pickled veggies. They have a great french onion soup that is great for sandwich dipping if it's available.
La Panaderia Bakery and Cafe
La Panaderia looks like a bakery at first glance, but they are making up some of the best sandwiches in town. They have an array of tortas served on selection of croissant, telera, kamut or birote bread. The mexican cubana torta contains sausage, ham, cilantro mayo and chipotle mustard. On a croissant this torta is heaven in a sandwich. They also have black bean soup, fideo, cesar salad or rice as sides.
Twin Sisters Bakery and Cafe
Next to the McNay in Alamo Heights, Twin Sisters has been serving up lunch for the past forty years. The menu sticks to the classics like egg salad, avocado and cream cheese, oven roasted turkey, and bacon/avocado/tomato. The sandwiches are served on fresh baked choice of whole wheat or parmesan cheese bread. The two of three combo lets you pick a half sandwich with soup or salad along with a cornbread muffin. Wash it all down with the raspberry tea and enjoy the day.
The Hayden
In a modern diner setting The Hayden serves delectable lunch sandwiches. The pastrami and swiss is one of the best you can find in town. The Hayden has a full bar, so one of the few places you can have a craft cocktail with your sandwich.
