Retro Shopping In San Antonio
While a trip to IKEA is always fun, over the years I have grown a new appreciation for vintage furniture and housewares. Grandma's Pyrex used to seem dated, but now it just has new life in a world of sameness. After renovating a 1950's and now a 1970's house, these are my favorite places in San Antonio to find unique retro items.
Architectural Antiques Salvage
This place is a treasure trove. I love to just walk through and see what they have available. A star shaped mount was missing from a mirror in my 1950's bathroom and this is where I found one to match. It's located in the warehouse district on the eastside that is now seeing some gentrification. If you are renovating a home and want to get it back to the era this is where you can find old doors, windows, wood board, and did I mention claw foot tubs? They try to salvage what would otherwise be thrown away. The owners are very friendly and will help you find what you need, and they know a wealth of information about each era.
If you like the 1950's this small but well stocked shop has tons of mid century modern pieces. They post finds on Instagram, and often stuff sells out on the same day. They search high and low so you don't have to and have all kinds of interesting things like starburst clocks and vintage floor lamps. They recently posted a bookshelf that even had a spot for vinyl. Furniture finders is close to the Hildebrand antique strip, so don't miss this one if in the area.
Antiques on Hildebrand
This shop is packed with stuff, and the owner is more willing to negotiate if buying multiple items. They have some really neat things like vintage patio furniture like the 1950's gliders. Beautiful artwork, retro desks, side tables and all kinds of stuff you never knew you needed. When in this area also check out R&G Antiques and Treasures and Lasting Impressions on Hildebrand, then eat at Mr. Juicy.
Ironside Antique Mall
Off of Wurzbach and I10 is a hidden gem, Ironside Antique Mall. This is by far my favorite place to find vintage lighting. I love mixing new modern items with vintage and the best way to do it is with lighting. If you need a good electrician to rewire stuff message me. Once rewired these items can really bring life to a room. Ironside also has really cool vintage toys, furniture and such. It is set up with stalls that host different vendors.
This vintage shop is located off of Blanco close to Northstar Mall. This is a great spot to find paintings, coins, vintage records, and collectibles. If you like vintage barware and glassware this shop has a good selection. At Armadillo the inventory is constantly changing, so if you don't find what you are looking for they may have it eventually.
Top Hat Estate Sales/Emporium
Top Hat started out as an estate sale business (and they still do host estate sales). I found out about them when I stopped by an estate sale in my neighborhood and it was so well run. Well now they have an emporium out in Floresville and it is packed with stuff. Some of it is priced a bit on the high side, but there are all kinds of interesting things available. If you like vintage Christmas ornaments, signage, books, camera equipment, etc this is the place. It can take some time to look through everything so plan on an hour or two then grab some BBQ in town.
If you are looking for eclectic items, then Antiques At Broadway is a great choice. I love vintage stamps and this shop has some cool stuff. This shop is a type of co-op, so sometimes it can take a bit of time to find information. It is on the smaller side, but a well curated selection.
This shop is only open Monday to Friday, but if you have time to attend an auction there are deals to be had. All different types of lamps, artwork, furniture, vases, and other collectible items. This is also a good spot to find antique firearms. I believe people can also consign here. This one is located of off the Blanco/410 area.
